I always try to attend at least one NCMF training course each year. Technology is evolving on a daily basis and NCMF continues to keep up with the times and each course is updated accordingly. The courses allow me to keep my skills not only current but also relevant.

The National Center for Media Forensics at the University of Colorado Denver is pleased to offer the following training courses.



Forensic Image Authentication and Analysis of AI-Generated Images

September 8-11, 2025 

9:00 am-1:00 pm (MT) online live video meeting 

Instructor: Catalin Grigoras 

Registration Deadline: August 18 

Cost: $1,500 

Students explore authentication of digital images with regard to evidence admissibility and counterfeit detection. Structure analysis, EXIF data analysis, recompression analysis, DCT, PRNU, AI-generated image analysis, and more will be discussed. Students are strongly encouraged to bring images from their own cases as well as their own digital cameras. Students will complete hands-on exercises using real image examples and forensic casework. 


Fundamentals of Forensic Audio Enhancement

October 14-17, 2025 

12:00-3:00 pm (MT) online live video meeting, with 1-2 hours each day of self-guided practice 

Instructor: Jeff Smith 

Registration Deadline: September 22 

Cost: $1,500 

This course covers practical fundamentals in digital audio theory, forensic audio handling, and enhancement. Specifically, hands-on practice will include: digital evidence tools that can aid in the recovery of digital audio, spectral tools for forensic analysis including the FFT spectrum and spectrogram, and specific filters for noise reduction and stereo source separation. Students will create their own recordings for group problem solving and discussion. 


Requirements for Training Courses

In order to secure a spot in a course, payment must be made in full. Spots are available on a first-come, first-served basis.  

Please note that some of the methods and software discussed and presented may only be available for demonstration purposes and/or to law enforcement agencies. 

Previous experience/formal training with digital evidence is recommended for all courses.

Online courses have the following computer requirements to participate: 

  • Completion of CU Denver access steps including: sponsored user request; account claiming; and multi-factor authentication via Duo Security. Instructions to complete each access step provided after registration. 
  • Completion of steps to connect to remote desktop. Instructions to complete provided after registration. 
  • High-speed, stable internet connection. 
  • Access to Zoom video conferencing software. 
  • Computer microphone to interact with instructor (video is optional). 
  • Optional: Multiple screens to more easily manage the Zoom session and hands-on remote computer work concurrently. 

Attendees who successfully complete the exam at the end of each course will receive a letter and certificate of completion of the training. NCMF certificates do not constitute professional certification as a forensic expert.
