Since its founding in 2008, Smith has helped build the foundation for strengthening forensic sciences in the U.S. through the Center’s education and research programs. Smith’s research areas include multimedia file analysis, multimedia processing at scale, the application of machine learning/AI in forensics, and forensic biometric comparison. At the NCMF, Smith led cutting edge research under DARPA MediFor (2016-2020) and developed numerous training and Masters courses. Smith joined the MITRE Corporation in Northern VA in 2020 where he provides subject matter expertise on projects for the federal government. He is a Fellow of the American Academy of Forensic Sciences (AAFS), a member of the Audio Engineering Society, and a regular contributor to the Scientific Working Group on Digital Evidence (SWGDE).
