I Cannot Heave My Heart Into My Mouth includes the work of 22 members of the College of Arts & Media faculty.
Four works from sculpture Michael Brohman examine cultural and physical relationships through materials, contrasts, and inferred meaning. “Borders”, a cast iron piece many feet tall and long, uses casts bodies to create what can be seen upon entering the gallery as physical a wall and barrier that must be passed around before entering the exhibition. Other works by Brohman, made of hide and human skulls raise issue the human remains being for sale in modern society.
Paintings of plant forms in vivid colors, from the accomplished Vivian George, anchor the back wall of the Emmanuel Art Gallery. George received her MFA from Yale University and her paintings are in the collections of Yale University, American Reinsurance, Rutgers University, Denver University, and the Arts Union Moscow.
The exhibition is varied with traditional and contemporary art forms, also displaying digital, film, publications, and sonic works, representing each artist’s unique interests and background. Enough White Teacups is a documentary feature film by award winning experimental and documentary film-maker, Michelle Bauer Carpenter. The film, which screens in the gallery loft, addresses how smart design and intervention can tackle issues of sustainability and has won numerous accolades from international film festivals.
A partnership between Recording Arts faculty, Jeff Merkel and Cecilia Wu, "Embodied Sonic Meditation work 4: Synesthetic Mindscape," is the actualization of boundary-crossing research studying synthetic connections of sound-triggering color. This is an interactive display that immerses the gallery visitor in virtual reality to explore their own conscience reaction to sound and computer-generated graphics.
