James Phelan began his profession career in New York with Wm. Esty Advertising. He moved to California to work for producer N. Lee Lacy in Los Angeles as a Line Producer. Phelan moved to Colorado to work at the Summervail Art Workshop in 1972. He also ran Barbre Productions, owned by the ABC television company and managed to turn it around to become profitable again. After managing his own Phelan Productions Inc. for 40 years, James Phelan decided to teach.
