John Smyly

John Smyly graduated from the Master of Science in Media Forensics in 2023. Over the past 20 years, he has primarily worked in law enforcement where he served in roles to include patrol officer, police training officer, crime scene investigator, and SWAT operator. He became drawn to the technical side of law enforcement after learning the significant impact that video/audio can have on police investigations. During his career in public safety, Smyly has authored a number of detailed forensic reports and provided testimony in several court proceedings.

Since graduating, Smyly obtained his certification as a Forensic Video Technician through the Law Enforcement and Emergency Services Video Association (LEVA). He has played a key role in starting forensic media units at two Colorado police agencies: the Arapahoe County Sheriff’s Office and the University of Colorado Anschutz Police Department where he currently serves as the Digital Media and Evidence Program Manager.
