Nov 22, 2023Denver sculptor Michael Brohman is currently exhibiting sculptural works at the Hall Gallery in the Windgate Visual Arts Center at Millsaps College from November 6-December 1, 2023. The artist will give a talk on his work on Thursday, November 30 at 6 pm at the Wingate Gallery.
“In A World of Circles and Squares” is a solo sculptural exhibition by sculptor and University of Colorado Denver Senior Instructor, Michael Brohman. “In A World of Circles and Squares” explores the systems and strategies that White people have implemented to create, uphold, and navigate racism. Through the use of found and fabricated objects as well as text and color, narratives are created that confront the notion of hierarchy and divisiveness. The works subtly categorize the viewer as possessing “inclusiveness” or “otherness”. Personal belief systems and biases are reflected in how the viewer interprets the objects and imagery used.
There are overlapping rings of meaning in each piece that begin with the particular and extend outward. Themes vacillate between the intensely personal and the communal. His works are skillfully crafted, quiet, and contemplative, while at the same time, potentially raw and unsettling. The emotional investigations presented are beautiful in their honesty and integrity and they possess visual and psychological tensions.
In 2022 Michael had a solo exhibition at the University of Southern Mississippi Art Museum in Hattiesburg, MS. In 2018 Michael had an exhibition at The Dairy Arts Center, Boulder, CO, “Divided: Race and Identity in Modern America” as well an exhibition at The Firehouse Art Center, Longmont, CO, “A Place In History”. He also had a solo exhibition in 2018 at the Western Colorado Center for the Arts, Grand Junction, CO, “The Land In Which We Live”.
In 2015 his exhibition, “Horizons, was named “Best Sculpture Show-Solo” by Westword Magazine (Denver). Additionally, in 2013 his exhibition, “Place”, was named “Best Gallery Show-Solo” by Westword. He received the Curators Award from the Kinsey Institute for Research in Sex, Gender, and Reproduction. He has participated in residencies at The Santa Fe Art Institute (Santa Fe, NM) and Jentel Residency (Banner, WY). He has been on the faculty of the Visual Arts Department at the University of Colorado Denver for twenty-five years. He has also taught study abroad programs in Scotland, Ireland, and China.
