Béla Fleck Inspires CU Denver MEIS Students in Master Class
Alice Crogan | College of Arts & Media Nov 25, 2024Renowned banjo virtuoso Béla Fleck captivated Music & Entertainment Industry Studies (MEIS) students at CU Denver with a master class in the King Center on November 15, 2024. The event, held ahead of Fleck’s weekend performances with the Colorado Symphony where he performed Rhapsody in Blue, provided students with a incredible opportunity to learn from a living legend.
The session was led by Songwriter Assistant Professor Dango Rose (songwriter, storyteller, performer and co-founder of Elephant Revival), who guided a dynamic conversation.. Fleck began the session by sharing his journey in music, recounting his early fascination with the banjo and how it led him on a path of discovery. He explored the instrument’s rich history, recounting his early days on the road in the U.S. while demonstrating the banjo's evolution through early and contemporary music and regional styles. "The banjo came to the U.S. from Africa with slaves," said Fleck. "Knowing the history of the banjo, and that it is a Black instrument, is an important part of knowing how to play it."
Known worldwide as a collaborator, Fleck shared stories of working with artists as varied as Phish and Chick Corea. Demonstrating his collaboration with the Colorado Symphony, he transitioned seamlessly from traditional bluegrass to Gershwin’s timeless tunes, showing how the five-string banjo can shine in orchestral works like Rhapsody in Blue.
Students were fully engaged throughout the master class, with many staying after the session to share how Fleck had influenced their own musical journeys. One student even played a recording of their song, seeking his invaluable feedback. The College of Arts & Media is honored to host musical legends like Béla Fleck, whose artistry and wisdom continue to inspire the next generation of musicians.
