What attracted you to CU Denver?
I transferred to CU Denver from the Community College of Denver. The transfer process was easy, and being able to stay on the Auraria campus was great. CU Denver's design program was also appealing because of the real world application of the concepts being taught. The Digital Design program offers both UI/UX and motion design, which adds extra skills that I can offer as a designer.
How have your interests evolved as you’ve studied in CAM and what have you found most pleasantly surprising about the community in CAM?
Through
CAM, I’ve been able to explore different interests through my elective
courses in ways that I haven’t otherwise. In particular, International
Perspectives through Literature and Film and Music Appreciation have
been some of my favorite elective courses. In addition to those classes,
Media of Drawing has allowed me to extend my passion for creating art
outside of a design context. All of these additional courses have molded
both my creative and critical thinking skills while enriching my
educational experience.
CAM,
if not CU Denver in general, attracts a community of doers. Being surrounded
by others who are passionate about the work that they’re doing is
inspiring. A majority of my peers and instructors are actively pursuing
creative projects and participating in the industry, which helps me
think differently about my own projects and how I can push my work
further.
How has receiving a scholarship positively impacted your college and academic experience?
Receiving
financial support through scholarships has made my college experience
less stressful and has added so much value. Besides the relief that
comes with not having to worry about how I’m paying for school, knowing
that I am supported by CAM in doing what I enjoy most is motivating. I
will be graduating from CU Denver completely debt free because of the support
that I have received from grants and scholarships, feeling confident in
my academic achievements and supported by my community.
What are your post-CAM plans and/or ambitions?
After
graduating, I want to intern with a design agency to get a better feel
for brand strategy and art direction. I’ve always enjoyed hearing the
stories of organizations and companies and thinking about how design can
be used to communicate their brand effectively. I like working with
brands that have a social good focus; my overall goal is to use design as a means of empowering underserved communities by lending support to organizations dedicated to their upliftment.
How has receiving a scholarship helped you reach your goals and how would you thank those who have donated to the CAM scholarship fund?
As
a Latina and a first-generation student, receiving scholarships serves
as a source of encouragement for younger Latina women wanting to pursue
design. I want to encourage the younger generation of Latino designers
to pursue their passions in creative fields. Having received
scholarships and grants serves as proof that creative industries and
art/design education is valued and supported.
To those that have donated to the CAM scholarship fund, your investment in my education has made it possible for me to pursue design and help others through design. As part of the Digital Design program, I am helping brand the first Puerto Rican theater in Colorado, and branding Latinx Therapy, a nationwide therapist directory for Latinos. I am dedicated to excelling academically and giving back to my community. Your generosity has empowered me as I leave UCD and embark on my professional journey. Thank you!
