Maxwell Lewis

Lecturer
  • Music and Entertainment Studies (CAM)

Lewis was born and raised in Columbus, OH. As a child, he noticed the emotional impact music made upon his friends and family, but he was always afraid of it himself. The first time he felt frisson from a song was a fright, uncertain if all the hairs that stood on end meant he was to feel excited or prepare for lightning to strike. But this desire to understand it became a strong motivation to fuel both his curiosity and control over a world full of acoustic chaos.

In grade school, Lewis was diagnosed with APD (auditory processing disorder). With the help and support of his family, he was able to overcome some of the more invasive hallmarks that came with his condition, and to live with the consequences of the inevitability of a loud, abrasive world. As years passed, Lewis' reverence for the power of how we each experience sound only grew, as did the inevitability of a life that would be loud, chaotic, and sometimes even hostile. The choice to confront and control how sound can be shaped and experienced became the very catalyst that would lead Lewis down a life of full of music, performance, engineering, and sound design. Eventually, by his mid-twenties, Lewis was running a professional recording studio in his hometown and touring in bands all across the United States.

What once made his life chaotic and difficult became his primary passion. Now, not a day goes by that he doesn't look forward to teaching his students how to face the music, and how to deconstruct it, too!
