With a passion for many different musical genres, Evan Shelton has dedicated his career to exploring the performance and pedagogy of not only classical music, but also rock, pop, jazz, and other alternative styles. It is his mission to engage cellists in the music they are interested in, regardless of genre.
Evan studied cello under Barbara Thiem, Richard Slavich, and Carol Tarr. He holds a cello performance degree from Colorado State University (CSU) and a graduate degree in Suzuki pedagogy from the Lamont School of Music at the University of Denver (DU). During his time at DU, he completed training certifying him in all 10 levels of Suzuki cello pedagogy. While studying at CSU, Evan joined the rock band Other Side of Clearview, allowing him to branch out of the classical world and learn to perform and teach rock, pop, and jazz. Since then, he has gone on to co-found the genre-bending ensemble Denver Nexus Project, which presents programs that showcase the similarities between classical and pop/rock.
As a performer, Evan regularly plays with the cello section of the Colorado Symphony and has performed with the Indigo Girls, Amos Lee, Pretty Lights, and others. He has also had the pleasure of playing in many of Colorado’s top venues such as the Boettcher Concert Hall, Red Rocks Amphitheater, and others
He is currently a Lecturer at the University of Colorado Denver, the Cello Instructor for Colorado College, and the Strings Instructor at the Community College of Denver.
