Roma Sur is a screenwriter and filmmaker, who found her niche in narrating cross-cultural stories that channel her Asian American immigrant experience of living in the US for twenty years, and her childhood in Cosmopolitan India. She comes from a family of fierce independent women, and they often form the core of her writing. She writes young adult and female driven dramas with levity.

Sur is currently in pre-production for her recent feature screenplay, The Rock Within, which has been a second rounder at Sundance feature lab, 2018, an official select, at the Stowe Story Labs, 2018, an invited project at the Stowe Spring Retreat, 2019, a second rounder at India’s leading pitch market, Film Bazaar, 2019, and a quarter finalist at Screencraft’s Funding contest, 2019. It is slated for a summer 2021 production.

In summer 2021, Sur completed a feature screenplay adaptation, titled Debu’s Journey. Targeted towards the young adult audience, this is a historical fiction set against the communal riots of 1980s North East India.

Sur leads the study abroad to Mumbai, titled Bollywood Connections. A cohort of eleven students traveled to Mumbai in summer 2019, to produce a bilingual fiction film in collaboration with Whistling Woods International, Mumbai. It was shot on location in the heart of Film City lot. The short film titled, Not Pictured, has had eleven global screenings so far, still in the running. It won the prestigious Dada Saheb Phalke, Special Jury award, 2019.

Sur is currently in post-production for her documentary film, Maa. Shot across Kolkata, India, Canada and Mumbai, this film follows a septuagenarian on her road to recovery from Kolkata to Niagara. Production started in December 2018, and will be completed in fall 2020.

Sur has also served as an Executive Producer on two award-winning web series, and directed and produced five award-winning documentaries.

Sur is the recipient of the 2020 President’s Diversity award, one of the highest honors across all four campuses of University of Colorado. She has also served as a Script Analyst and a screener at the Denver International Film Festival.

Sur lives in Denver, Colorado with her husband and her son.
